TUNG YANG-TZU (TONG YANG-TZU)董陽孜
ZHEJIANG, CHINAb.1942
Female Taiwanese calligrapher ofZhejiang originbut born in Shanghai.  She studied at Department of Art, National Normal University in 1962.  In addition to learning techniques of painting, she was taught by calligrapher seniors like Fu Shen, Zhang Long Yan, Ding Nian Xian, Tai Jing Nong, etc., practicing scripts of Han Li and The Four Calligrapher of Song Dynasty.  She went to the United States for further study after graduation then returned to Taiwan after obtaining MFA degree at University of Massachusetts.  Starting from modeling ancient stone rubbings, she emphasized on standard ones by Yen Chen-Ching and Wei scrip at her early stage; recently her style changed to Wang Xi Zhi and Huai Su’s styles.  She integrated Western theory of composition into creation, presenting an aesthetic balanced between modern graphic design and traditional calligraphy.
