Van Lau was born in 1933 in Xinhui of Guangdong province.  He emigrated to Vietnam with his parents when he was merely three years old.  Educated in Taiwan and then went to the U.S for further education, in 1960 he moved to Hong Kong permanently.  He had been able to learn diversely in the field of art from his experience of having stayed in different countries, and he began his career as a sculptor in his middle age.  His works absorbs the advantages of western modern sculptures: modern structure.  He devoted himself to the field of public art where the style of his works perfectly responds to modern cities.  However, the concept of his creations was to look for profound meanings from Chinese traditional art, and convey the Chinese traditional spirits by modern style.  The artist himself has academic cultural cultivation, and strong senses of humanistic character and Chinese cultural spirit.
