HomeARTISTSHAI TIEN Introduction
Hai Tien is one of the very few contemporary Chinese artists of her generation who trained overseas before China was opened to the western world in the 1980’s.  As a teenager she studied art in her native Shanghai before continuing her training in Hong Kong and the U.S.  In New York she attended the School of Visual Art and was awarded a scholarship to study at the prestigious Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.  She graduated a BFA from Cooper Union in 1969.

In Buddha of Now, the use of form and line in Hai Tien’s work has evolved and become more defined.  This painting from 1993 illustrates the great lyricism in her work at this time, with a strong animated quality achieved through carefully positioned receding forms, both painted and collage.
