Zhang Nian was born in Sichuan in 1964.  The year he graduated from the Central Academy of Arts and Design, he was invited to give lecture at Cheung Kong School of Arts and Design, Shantou University.  He now lives and works in Beijing.  Some of his major exhibitions include: 2000 “New Art from China,” Tokyo, Japan; 2002 “Dialogue – Contemporary Chinese Art,” Italy; 2005 “Allusion and Photography,” 798 Space, Beijing; 2005 “Relations,” Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan; 2005 “Viewing the Body with Body,” Museu de Arte de Macau, Macau; 2006 “Mobile Socialism – Contemporary Art Exhibition” Beijing.  In fact, it is through a feeling of waiting that Zhang Nian expresses the undividable relationships between individuals and groups, democracy and nations.  Zhang Nian’s bird nest and egg carry a direct relation with hatch, which is a realization of what Zhang Nian makes metaphor for ecology.  Moreover, Zhang’s art also explains that he and his other co-generation artists put their hopes and dreams into art, waiting for a bright future to come.
