MÁLAGA, SPAIN1881-1973
Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born in 1881 in Málaga, Spain.  He inherited both of his parents’ last names, especially the rare one from his mother’s side – Picasso, which became so commonly recognized all over the world.  Picasso’s work is often categorized into periods.  Before 1900, realism and symbolism dominated his artistic style; later in 1901, affected by his friend’s suicide, Picasso’s Blue Period (1901-1904) consists of somber paintings rendered in shades of blue and blue-green, while the subject matter focuses on beggars, prostitutes, and the blind.  In 1904, Picasso fell in love.  The crucial event initiated Picasso’s following “Rose Period,” which is characterized by a more cheery style with orange and pink colors.  Last but not least, “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” (The Young Ladies of Avignon), perhaps the best known painting among all of his artworks, could be said as the divide of twentieth century art.
